Why You Should Shoot RAW? (RAW vs JPEG)

Klook.com

As an amateur enthusiast in photography, I try and try so many things that would make a picture look great and all. I have read and searched for tips online of the different techniques and methodologies most photographers use, some of them I've considered while others I've ignored. One of the basic tips given online is shooting RAW which I have constantly ignored mainly because the data storage for that format is way bigger than JPG. Now, after traveling for more than a year, it came to a point that I wanna try to shoot and compare the difference between the two, RAW and JPG. And it was a Saturday of October this year in Ortigas' Business District that my experimentation came true. After a little tweaking with clarity, saturation and vibrance at the same levels with the two formats, I came to realize how my stubbornness had cost the quality my pictures for the different destinations for the past few years. I realized how RAW format, especially in scapes, is very much useful which you can see for yourself.

These photos were taken at round 9pm:

RAW Format
27mm, 84 sec @ f/22 ISO 640

JPEG Format
27mm, 84 sec @ f/22 ISO 640

Well, what can I say? It was a mistake I've learned the hard way. But I am glad, I gave in to my curiosity. And, yeah, it could really use up more storage space but at least now I know what I am trading for with that storage issues.

True that!
Especially since you use digital photograph, RAW allows you to have more dynamics in editing w/o ruining the rest of the pic. More so, memory is cheap. B-)

Lovely photo!

I honestly never knew about Raw photos until my Dad told me about it. He's a street photography enthusiast. He takes pictures everyday!

Just yesterday, we were talking about the camera I bought for my mom. Dad asked me, "Does your camera take raw photos?" and I said yes not knowing what RAW actually means. :P I guess he noticed that I looked unsure so he explained to me what RAW means :)

@Francis: Ekanga negative daw ng digital world. Char. Hehe

@Tricia: I can totally relate to your reaction when you were asked, took me some time to process and research about it. :)

@June: Ikr. Kala ko wala masyadong difference, I was wrong!

Congrats! Finally a raw convert ha :)

By the way, why f/22 iso640? Since you're shooting long exposure at night, you should set your iso to the lowest setting to keep the noise down and set your aperture to f/8 as standard. You then choose the appropriate shutterspeed for that :)

Hahaha Convert kuno. Salamat sa tips! Will keep that in mind :D

One more pa pala :)

When you're processing raw files on adobe camera raw (the program that opens before it gets exported to photoshop), just click on the white balance tool (dropper icon, third one on the upper left) then click it on a white part of your photo and it will automatically correct your photos white balance, giving you a better and more accurate colors :)

Waaaa. Christian, I'm only using Lightroom. Hahaha Not a total convert pa :|

I can feel you. I never try it before because I was too lazy to just try! Hahaha I'm glad I've helped, in some way :)

I haven't been shooting raw while travelling but I will on my next trip. It's certainly worth it for the editing capabilities.

Agree. Especially with low light conditions. :) I hope you'd get the results that you wanted!
